Is chammomile tea my only option for herbal sleep aids while breastfeeding?

I’ve been stressed lately due to some medical issues my baby is having. I can’t fall asleep at night, sometimes until 2am and I desperately need it b/c my baby still wakes up a few times per night. I’m wondering if anyone has used chammomile while breastfeeding or any other homeopathic type remedies. I will check with my dr. before using any herbs but I want to know what has worked for others. Chamomile is fine to take, so is valerian. People do not recommend valerian to pregnant woman because there supoosedly isn’t enough research that only means theres not enough American research. European herbal sources say it’s fine but to not take for more than two weeks straight. They speak about high doses, a cup of tea at night wouldn’t hurt you or the baby. You could also try skullcap. I follow my Italian herbalists instructions during my pregnancy snd took valerian; I slept very well and my three month old baby is healthy.

Do gas stations sell sleep aids of any kind?

I have to get up at 5:45 AM tomorrow morning and I woke up at 11:00 AM this morning so obviously I’m going to need something to knock me out and put me to sleep. I have to ride a bike, because I don’t have a car, so the closest place is a gas station, and I want to know if anyone knows if a gas station normally sells NyQuil or any other kind of sleep aid? It’s a Presto, a rather large station.

How can I stop taking antidepressants and Sleep aids without getting sick?

I have been on sleepaids and antidepressants for a long time and I dont want to be on them anymore I have tried to stop taking them and became very sick. I want these pills out of my system I feel like a zombie. Anyone got any ideas?

Gregg, have you talked to your Doc about how these meds make you feel? And have you discussed trying different meds?
I started on anti-depressants in my mid-20’s. I was noncompliant on my meds well into my 30’s. I’d get better, and think I didn’t need them anymore and go off them. Then another depressive episode would hit and I’d wait until I was crying all the time, wsn’t bathing for days at a time and was feeling helpless and hopeless before I’d go back to my Therapist and get back on meds.
If you are seeing a Primary Care Physician instead of a Psychiatrist for medication management, I urge you strongly to go see a Psy for meds. They are so much more knowledgeable about what drugs work in combination, what the newest drugs are. And be HONEST about how the drugs make you feel. If it’s now working after a couple or three weeks TELL the Doc so you can switch to something that DOES work or that has fewer side effects.
Depression, or Bi-Polar Disorder or any other Mental Health issue is NOT a character flaw and cannot be overcome with WILL and hope. It has to be dealt with by balancing your brain’s chemistry and sometimes with talk therapy, too.

I have been having more problems than usual in my sleep habits and it is affecting my wife now, any help?

I often awaken violently at night, typically confused about whether I am awake or dreaming. Sometimes I remember these episodes and sometimes I don’t. I have always had problems sleeping but am worried because these episodes have been happening with greater frequency. My wife says it is quite scary and is afraid I’m either going to give myself a heart attack or her. Besides the safety issue, I worry that I am causing her to have such disruptive sleep now as well. What is going on and is this something that can be treated without medication? I am a thin, active male, 34, almost 35 years old who has had various sleep problems since I was a child- insomnia and night terrors mostly.

A new Canadian study analyzes the sleep habits from children age 1.5 to 5 years looking for an association between sleep problems and the development of ADHD.  The study confirms something I have been pointing out for a number of years – that an unstable family sets the “stress thermostat” into a hyper-vigilant mode resulting in a lack of sleep, wired nerves, and future ADHD.  Boys with early sleep problems were more likely to be ADHD by age 5.

I have covered all the technical reasons for this in an earlier feature-length article on teenagers, “Teen Sleep Problems Lead to Depression and Drug Abuse.”  This new study confirms that the teenage problems likely have a very early start in the environmental brain programming of a child.

In one word, the solution is STABILITY.  The more stable the environment for a child the less likely they are to learn the wrong lesson of setting their stress system to a hyper mode.  The importance of this is that brain wiring in these earlier years is more like computer hardware than software – experiences that govern behavior and solutions in future years.

The problem of instability affects boys more strongly than girls, likely because of the effects of estrogen on the brain wiring of girls (higher antioxidant and basic relaxation status).  Thus, girls seem more able to handle an unstable early environment without becoming hyper-programmed.

Testosterone wiring of the brain in boys has less antioxidant capacity and is more prone to inflammation.  Testosterone is also more suitable to self-oriented and competitive survival impulses.  In a sense you could say that ADHD behavior is an example of testosterone gone bad.

Regardless, too much stress in the family is a major problem for the brain wiring of boys.  Since high stress is common in families these days, strategies should be employed to reduce the impact of stress on children.  Don’t argue in front of your kids.  Have consistent family times and activities that convey a sense of stability to your children (like family dinners and a weekly family outing).  Involve them in as many creative and constructive learning activities as possible (both mental and physical).  Nutrition to calm nerves is always helpful for stress and sleep (B-vitamins, DHA, calcium, and magnesium are the basics.)  Good parenting is a major responsibility.

There are other factors that help set the stage for ADHD; leptin problems in the mother, chemical toxins, excessive numbers of brain-inflammatory immunizations, and poor diet – to name a few.  However, the environmental impact on the developing nervous system is significant and affects the future health and well-being of your child for a lifetime.

How do I cure Sleep Problems?

For a few years at the most, I have had trouble falling asleep. I didn’t pay attention to it because I was a kid and it seemed normal. I’ve been having sleeping problems for a few months now. Why am i getting so paranoid and cant sleep?

I first noticed this when i would come home from boarding school freshman year. When I would come home, no matter how hard I tried, i could not fall asleep. I felt so paranoid about where I was, and would just walk around the house all night and watch TV. Why can’t I fall asleep, and what should I do so I can get the proper amount of sleep I need to function?

The strange surroundings, as crazy as it may seem because you are actually at home, can have an effect.
I suggest the following for exam prep, but it may well work here.
Sit in a chair where you can relax, are not going to be disturbed. Arms and legs uncrossed, and just relax. Think of somewhere peaceful you would like to be, the beach for example.
Count very slowly, from 1 to 10, as you take yourself on an imaginary journey. Let all the tensions and stress flow out as you relax and get closer, until finally, at number 10, you arrive.
Before you go to bed, a warm milky drink, (no caffeine) don’t read or watch TV, instead listen to relaxing music, (no vocals) , pan pipes are ideal, and just let yourself drift off into a peaceful sleep.

my second study where I will be wears the CPAP mask this time in addition to the 25 wires, 2 belts, nasal canula and pulse ox meter. I was really hard to sleep last time. I wonder if taking some type of sleep aid will mess up the test?

Yes it will. You are not to take anything except for your daily, prescribed medications. You will be amazed how well you will sleep when you can breathe without snoring with the CPAP mask on. After being chronically sleep deprived because of sleep apnea, this is going to be a blessing. Don’t take any sleep aids.

This is not a cure but it helps once in awhile. Make a cup of tea with 2 Sleepytime tea teabags ( you can get it at the store) and about a half cup of catnip. Let it sit for a few hours. Take that with 2 tylenol p.m.’s. you can get it without the tylenol too. It’s called ‘just sleep.’ It will knock you out for hours. Do it when you have time to sleep for about 10 or 12 hours. If you do this once in awhile, it helps.

Anyone have an autistic child with sleep problems?

My son is 4 and is autistic. He has a horrible sleeping pattern. I know it is common in these kids to have sleep problems. Does anyone know what I can do to help him sleep? I work full time and go to school and I am exhausted. I feel like I still have a newborn some days. Please answer only if you are a professional or have children with this disorder.
