Common Sleep Problems

There may actually be as many different sleep problems as there are humans on the face of the Earth. While many people do share some common sleep problems and most of their typical symptoms, most people have their own unique experiences and frustrations while trying to overcome their disorder.

One of the biggest problems people have with sleep is difficulty actually falling asleep. This is a commonly reported symptom, but there are an endless variety of descriptions of why it is occurring. For one person it may be an overactive brain that refuses to stop thinking while another person may say they toss and turn with a completely blank mind, simply unable to fall asleep or focus on anything.

Other common sleep problems center on the inability to stay asleep for long periods of time. Again, how this is experienced will vary from person to person but millions from all over the world are experiencing it to some level. Some might just have occasional issues where something else wakes them up and it is impossible to fall back asleep while others experience continuous waking on a nightly basis, sometimes more than once per night.

Many people with sleep disorders also report that it is near impossible to stay alert and active during the day. It goes well beyond the afternoon slump that many people experience to a lesser extent, and can go so far as someone losing a job because they are falling asleep on their desk in the early morning.

What all of these common sleep problems have in common is the frustration and desperation that comes from trying to cure them.

Any ideas on how to stop sleep problems like teeth grinding and twitching?

My boyfriend breathes really loud, he snores, talks in his sleep, grinds his teeth, and incesantly twitches from the moment his head hits the pillow. I am a very light sleeper and I haven’t gotten a good nights sleep in 2 years! Please help me!!

Answer
To possibly solve all these problems, he could try an over-the-counter sleep aid / muscle relaxer called “Melatonin”. To possibly stop the snoring tell him to sleep on his side or stomach. If he has insurance, tell him to ask his dentist about the teeth grinding because that could cause damage. If he twitches in the first half hour that is just part of the sleep cycle. but if he twitches all night long he might have a different issue. Also, if the melatonin doesn’t work and if he has insurance he should see a doctor about all these problems. You can also take melatonin to help YOU sleep.

If you get 1Mg pills he should take 2,3,or 4 a night, depending on height and weight and if you get the 3 Mg pills he should only need one. Good luck, i hope this works for you, it has helped my sister.

Concerned about childhood sleeping problems? Do you have children whom might have insomnia OR do you simply wish that they won’t develop insomnia in the future? If so, then you must turn away from the drug trade, for good.

Far too many parents are relying on drugs and pills and medications to treat their children, don’t be one of them. If prescriptions drugs are the only way to treat an illness, that’s entirely fine. However, when it comes to childhood insomnia, prescription drugs should be your LAST choice. Why? Because there are just so many other reliable options out there.

Aside from those small tips and tricks — such as keeping them on a regular bedtime schedule, not feeding them caffeine or sugar before bed, turning off all lights, giving them warm milk, etc. — the best way to treat your child’s insomnia is with sound. You heard correct, sound.

Using sound waves to treat insomnia is becoming ever more popular, as more and more scientists confirm it’s positive effects for sleeping. The sound waves work with our brain to put us in the right “mode” for sleep. These sounds, pulses, and beats penetrate our subconscious minds and then begin “massaging” and “soothing” our brains into a natural sort of rhythm The effect, for most people anyway, is instantaneous, allowing anyone listening to the sounds to fall into a deep, restful sleep.

Where can you get such sounds to help with childhood sleeping problems? Well, not from any grocery store or supermarket, that’s for sure. You may find such CDs/tapes in common stores, but they will likely be junk that will no more help you to sleep than would keeping the TV on at night. Simply put, stay away from those cheap imitations.

If you’re serious about beating childhood sleeping problems quickly and effectively, then you really ought to stick with online specialty websites. Such websites will be devoted to insomnia remedies and sleep therapy techniques. There are only a handful of them out there, but a quick online search is all you need to find one of these specialized sleeptrack websites. Choose the one you think is best and then you can start your child on the road to an insomnia-free future.

If you’d rather skip the search and just be told where to find the best sleep sound therapy program, then you need to visit http://www.SleepTracks.org, a website that specializes in both treating sleep disorders and combating childhood insomnia. If they can’t help you cure your insomnia problems, no one can!

Separation anxiety and sleep problems in 12 month old?

My 12 month old daughter has been having a hard time getting to sleep at night. She screams bloody murder when we put her in the crib at night, and she works herself up into a frenzy, even to the point where she is pulling her own hair out and she is getting bald spots. We rock her and hold her, lay down next to the crib, and nothing works to put her to sleep other than letting her scream in her crib. We give her 10 minutes and she usually stops within that time, but not without hysterics and hair pulling. We’ve tried giving her a paci or a lovey, but there is nothing that she wants. She just wants me to hold her. I wouldn’t mind holding her, but she doesn’t fall asleep that way, and I end up making the whole fiasco continue for hours. I would bring her into our bed, but she won’t sleep there. She thinks it’s time to play and crawls all over and it’s not safe for her. I need serious help! I just don’t know what to do.

Answer
Sit next to her crib while she falls asleep. Give her something else she can pull on/tear up instead of her hair. Play nice music, read her a story in a soothing voice.

Hair-pulling due to anxiety is a lifelong problem she’ll struggle with. I’m 29 and still do it from time to time. Your daughter needs coping mechanisms.

Sleep Problem Cure

Despite all the sleeping pills and specially formulated teas on the market, there is a natural sleep problem cure that will not cost you a single penny to implement into your life. If that sounds like what you have been looking for, consider just a few very basic changes you could make right now to start solving your sleeping issues.

1. Go to bed at the same time, every single night.

Whatever it is that causes you to have erratic sleeping schedules, it’s time to make some changes. Your body needs a routine sleep schedule that falls within your natural body rhythms. This is proven science here! If you are sleeping at odd times or only allowing a few hours a night, it’s time to work out a schedule so you are at least sleeping at the same times each day.

2. Make your bed a sleeper’s paradise.

The environment in which you are lying down is crucial to the quality of sleep you will receive. Make sure the mattress you are sleeping on is comfortable to your body and that the sheets and blankets are of the right textures and thickness to keep you comfortable. Adjust the air flow so you are comfortable, not too hot or cold. Get rid of the TV and other distractions and make your bedroom a designated sleeping zone.

While creating the optimal sleeping environment and lying down at the same time every night may not be the instant sleep problem cure to all of your problems, it is a starting point that will get you headed in the right direction while you find other methods for long term relief.

Can stress and lack of sleep cause memory problems?

I have had some bad sleeping patterns during the past years (sleeping late, waking up early and not having any specific sleep and wake up time and not getting enough sleep during the night) and I have also had stress and anxiety problems. Recently I have noticed that at times I have trouble remembering things that I could easily remember in the past….

Is lack of sleep and stress/anxiety related to memory problems? Can fixing the sleeping patterns and changing life-style help to improve the problem? I’m kind of worried is this problem dangerous? How can I fix it?
I remember once I even forgot my girlfriend’s name while she was sitting right next to me. I have started forgetting very simple stuff (Such as name, places etc…) although I’m still young (27). Could it all be due to my bad sleeping habits and stressful life-style?

Answer
Absolutely…yes.
To function normally the brain has to have a rest, just like a battery needs time to recharge.

People who experience from sleeplessness have problems falling or remaining asleep; and when they do sleep it’s often a poor quality of sleep. Some have confused sleeplessness with sleep issues, but they are different. Both result in severe fatigue and exhausted feelings, but sleep deprivation is cause by not having the chance to get the rest you need. Insomnia on the other hand is not being able to sleep even when the possibility is available. It is essential to realize that sleeping disorders is a problem that more than half of grown ups say they experience a few times each week, and this may be effecting you. Knowing this can help to lesson any concerns that there is something seriously wrong.

Understanding Insomnia

The first step to getting a handle on insomnia is to gain a better comprehension of the issue. There are in fact a two types of the sleep disorder, insomnia: 1. Primary insomnia is a problem sleeping that is not related to any other health issues and it tends to last a month or more. 2. Secondary or co-morbid insomnia is connected with another medical condition. It is believed that more than 80% of adults who suffer from insomnia have this type. Some of the medical conditions that can lead to co-morbid insomnia include heartburn, arthritis, pain, depressive disorders, and cancer heart and lung diseases. In addition medications, whether over the counter or prescription, alcohol, caffeine and tobacco can also cause sleep issues.

Determining the Cause of Insomnia

The first step in waging a successful battle against insomnia is to keep track of your sleep for a full week. Each night, for seven consecutive nights, note when you go to bed and how long it takes you to fall asleep. Also keep track of how often you wake up and if you have problems going back to sleep. Also noteany feelings of discomfort, such as temperature, pain, thirst, heartburn and so on. All of this information will help you and your medical practitioner understand what’s happening so a proper course of action can be recommended. There are a number of different things that can cause sleeplessness that aren’t associated to disease. In fact, lifestyle is a major contributing factor to insomnia. For example: Frequent travelers experience jet lag that can interrupt regular sleep patterns and body rhythms; Overeating can make you feel uncomfortable, and spicy, heavy or foods with high sugar content can cause heart burn which may also cause sleep issues• While alcohol is officially regarded a depressant, it can have the reverse effect at night, causing you to wake up and have problems sleeping.. • Too much coffee or other caffeinated beverages keep people awake as do cigarettes because both caffeine and nicotine are stimulants. • Shift workers also experience insomnia because sleep patterns are disrupted.

Sleep Etiquette Tips

Some Tips for Getting More Sleep Assuming that your insomnia is triggered by way of life issues there are a number of different things you can try to get over the issue without the use of prescription medication. 1. Develop a consistent sleep routine going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, even on weekends. 2. Avoid caffeine after two or three o’clock in the afternoon. This even includes candy! 3. Stay away from spicy foods and heavy meals 4. If you’re really hungry before bed, have a light snack to make sure feeling hungry doesn’t keep you awake. 5. A normal physical exercise routine can be a big help as long as you finish at least three hours before going to bed, since physical exercise will stimulate you. 6. Follow a relaxing bedtime program like reading or listening to songs tells your body that it’s time to relax and fall asleep. 7. Make sure your sleeping surroundings is comfortable and calming. 8. Eliminate interruptions including noise and light from a television, bright street lights, or a clock that shines into your eyes. 9. Try not to nap. If a nap is required, make it less than an hour so that you don’t through your bodies sleep rhythm off. 10. If you can’t fall asleep after about thirty minutes of trying, get up and do something relaxing. Often laying there struggling to fall asleep will only make you more wide awake and frustrated. If after trying these tips, you’re still having sleep problems that are unexplained, it would be a good idea to visit your doctor to determine if there are any underlying medical issues that could be the cause of your sleeping disorders.

9 month old sleep problems what do i do?

My 9 month old now only sleeps if someone holds him. He used to sleep in his crib by himself. I have tried every way to keep him in his bed because when he lays with me he has to lay really close to my chest if not on it and it is starting to hurt me. Please help I have no idea what to do anymore. What should I do?

Answer
We had the same problems with our son. Our son was getting separation anxiety. For son to sleep on his own i put his music on have a night light leave his door a tiny bit open so he still gets light (i open it completely when he is asleep) he also sleeps with a pillow that me or my partner has slept on so he has our scent. Not sure what your feelings are on pillows though. Our son has just turned 1 and sleeps great day and night now.

Sleep Problems? Extremely Simple Solutions

Are you having sleep problems that may interfere with your life, or that are already interfering with your ability to carry out your daily responsibilities? If so, the answers could be much simpler than you ever imagined. Consider just a couple ways to increase the quality of your sleep, starting tonight!

1. Honest Analysis

Take the time to honestly consider what is keeping you up at night. If you have difficulty falling asleep, what exactly is causing that? Maybe it’s a racing or worried mind that refuses to stop thinking about the day or your current problems. Perhaps it is the comfort of your current mattress or the snoring of a loved one. Whatever it is, you can’t fix it until you acknowledge it.

If you are waking up in the middle of the night due to pain in the legs, you may be suffering from restless leg syndrome. If you are having nightmares that scare you awake or are sleepwalking, those are disorders you need to take stock of right now.

2. Routines and Patterns

One of the biggest problems that cause sleep problems today is the erratic schedules most of us keep. If you are lying down at different times each night or allowing yourself to sleep until whenever you happen to wake up, stop right now!

You need a determined bed time and set waking time so that your body can get into the routine and know when it is time to start winding down and when it is about time to wake up. You want to wake up at the natural completion of a sleep cycle, instead of interrupting that. The best way to do that is to allow your body to adjust to a given sleep schedule.

Taking stock of the problem and following through is the beginning step, but it will get you on the way to a healthier sleep life if you take it right away.

How many times in the last few weeks have you tried to get your baby to sleep but to no avail? Millions of families go through this every night and when all else fails, baby sleep aids can help you to get some of the sleep you deserve and crave for.

The problem is that there are many baby sleep aids available, so which one do you choose? Here are a few examples of baby sleep aids that are commonly used and that you may wish to try to see if they’ll help to solve your baby’s sleeping problem..

Firstly, how can you go wrong with the good old blanket? At some point, every single one of us has us clung on to a blanket as babies. The comfort, security, and warmth will leave a baby feeling cozy and allow him to relax if he’s having trouble sleeping. It’s one of the best and most used baby sleep aids ever.

As a variation of this, you could use some other transitional object such as a teddy bear, or possibly mom’s t-shirt, so that your baby can settle down with a smell that he or she is comfortable with.

Unfortunately though, there are times when a blanket or other transitional object just won’t be enough, so you may wish to consider utilizing another baby sleep aid or baby sleep technique.

Night lights are also common baby sleep aids and can help make your child feel a little more comfortable in their dark surroundings. Although we may not know it, babies may often wake up and cry because they aren’t used to being alone and they don’t recognise their surroundings. A night light will give them security when they open their eyes. Being in familiar surroundings and being able to see the baby toys above the bed or stars on the ceiling will put them at ease.

Music or sounds are also great types of baby sleep aids you might want to try if you haven’t already. Soft, carefree music such as classical musical at low volumes is very soothing for a baby’s ears which can help get them to sleep. You could even leave this music playing through the entire night if it helped. Alternatively, white noise, which can sound horrible to adults, can be extremely soothing for a baby. A fan, having the television on, or even the sounds of nature …. birds, rain or whale sounds are very common. There are also white noise CD’s you can buy with the sound of a vacuum cleaner or washing machine etc. Again, these sound rather strange but really can help.

Although all of these are all capable baby sleep aids and many parents will testify to their effectiveness, it is also possible that none of them may work for your child. No two children are the same and so there is unfortunately no single cure-all for baby sleeping problems. However, with some tried and tested baby sleep techniques, a good sleep routine and the odd baby sleep aid thrown in for good measure, you and your baby can soon be getting the full nights sleep that you richly deserve.

Are you having sleep problems? Do you toss and turn at all hours of the night? If so, you are probably suffering from insomnia. And you are not alone! It’s estimated that about 20 million Americans suffer from some sort of sleep problem, or five to ten percent of the total U.S. population.

The consequences of insomnia include sleepiness and impaired physical functions. If you have chronic insomnia, you may find yourself to be overly alert all the time, and you have trouble relaxing or remaining calm. In addition, you may feel physical and emotional exhaustion.

There are lots of theories on how to deal with these types of sleep problems. Some include some rather unusual home remedies for insomnia. My personal favorite is a concoction of honey, tea, and milk, although it has never been proven that this actually works. Others have opted for hypnotherapy. Patients learn self-hypnosis that they can use at home when they are trying to sleep. This works on clients whose mind is easily open to suggestion, but it’s not quite as effective for those who are more analytical in their thinking.

A common “quick fix” for sleep problems for many people is to take sleeping aids, but these should only be used in very rare instances. Sleeping pills are highly addictive, and offer no real solution for your insomnia. And last year, the Food and Drug Administration found the most popular sleeping aids can cause strange behavior during sleep, such as driving and eating.

Jeff Farley has lots of great ways to eliminate sleep problems in his book, Stop Insomnia. Read more about it here

Is there a cure to my sleep problems after rhinoplasty.?

Because of a missplaced baseball I had septo/rhinoplasty, sinus surgery 2 weeks ago and have slept in a recliner up until last night to keep the swelling down amongst other things. Last night, wanting to get a good night sleep before my first visit back to church I slept in my bed. This made my face swell more which is uncomfortable.
So it seems like I’m either going to be sleep deprived or swollen. Is there a solution to this problem.

Answer
Hey Scribbles, I would call or go see the doctor and let him see it. mine stopped swelling on the second day.l Don’t take a chance could have an allegy. Matter of fact call the on call doctor in the morning. You call the regular number and they will have someone call you back. Have to take phone off call block deal.

Overload of work is the main cause of sleep problem. People are so must busy and due to the work schedule that really cannot sleep. If you don’t get a proper sleep, the major cause is the tension .You know the decider of your body is the mind. Mind is the main player. Hence what mind decides, your body acts accordingly, so what if your mind is busy in another thoughts in the process of sleeping then what that’s obvious you won’t get a proper sleep! If it persists then you suffer from the sleep problem. This may turn out to be fatal disease. Let me put it as if you ask your mind to do many tasks at the same time it may but not to the perfection. It does then perfect sleep else tension may attack .Now what is tension? A negative thought process that goes on coming and coming. I mean to say what you have to do while sleeping, as simple, thoughtless mind! Don’t think or if you want to, think positively. You know if you think positive an enzyme named as Interlulin-6 is secreted that is very good for your mind and sleep. If negatively then you can think so-So what? think positive and sleep well. Suppose if you have a sleep problem and negative mind games so what to do? Have sleep pills. Do you have any remedies? Ok don’t think, go to sleep, But, How to get a perfect sleep? Once you reach your bed and out to sleep, put all your official work at office, don’t forget before leaving, second can be regular practice of meditation, it is the best mind exercise, else if you can have mind tonics or perform other mind exercises or get indulged in a nice activity that will make your mind happy before going to sleep. If these cures are not enough then I am sorry you have to meet a specialist. But I guarantee these will work and have proven so get to the bed’s dream.

My sleep problems are out of control?

I cannot get myself out of bed without at least 10 hours of sleep, usually closer to 12 or 13. My schedule also changes all the time. When I “reset” myself back to getting up in the morning, I just can’t stay that way for much more than a week. I am missing out on life because all I do is sleep all day. I feel bad about myself and more depressed. My psychiatrist told me to use trazodone at night, but I already have problems waking up and I think that makes it worse. I just want to be able to wake up after 8 hours of sleep like a normal person. Even if I slept from 4 am to noon every day, I would be happy. When you get up after sleeping 13 hours and it’s already dark outside, you just feel awful. Is anyone else going through this? If so, any techniques or meds which worked for you?

Answer
you are not alone on this. Even if i get 10 hrs of sleep a night, i still hit that snooze alarm. I find myself rushing out the door and than i cant fall asleep till midnight. I have tried sleeping pills and they just do not help (at least for me). If pos take a warm bath at least one hr before you plan on going to bed. my Doc told me that would help me get a better night of sleep. also don’t drink anything with caffeine past 7pm. that makes you not sleep as well and then u are tie rd in the morning. my doc tells me to wake up the same time every morn even on weekends (yea right). i have been told that if you sleep more than eight hrs a night, you are sleeping way too much.

Sleeping problems in the elderly may involve a number of factors such as: decreased energy output as a result of retirement, the age of the person, their state of health, and any prescription drugs they may be taking for health problems.

A sleeping bag is probably the second most important item you need to purchase after your tent. Sleeping bags can be one of many types; depending on personal preference and outside temperature. The shape, size, room to move, and feel of the fabric should be sampled, just like you would try a mattress for your bed at home.

When newborns and young children sleep in or right next to the parents’ bed – is more widely practiced outside the U.S., but the trend is growing with new parents here in the states. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns against it, but many pediatricians, breast-feeding advocates and others disagree with the commission’s recommendation.

Restless Legs Syndrome is another common sleep disorder pregnant women may have. Their legs feel twitchy, painful, or just uncomfortable. It may possibly be caused by a deficiency in iron or folic acid. Many women who have RLS during pregnancy stop having symptoms once the baby is born.

Find ways to break this problem. Read a book before going to be. Not an exciting book but a technical book. Start thinking of the names of streets in your city that begin with certain letters of the alphabet. Focus your mind on the names of friends in alphabetic order. This is uninteresting, monotonous and boring. It is also tiresome. And that is the key word. You are going to get tired. Quite soon you’ll fall asleep!

Caffeinated foods and beverages act as a stimulant and can prevent you from sleeping. Drinking coffee or soda all day long up until bed time is a recipe for sleepless nights. Eliminating caffeine from your diet completely should affect your sleeping habits. If that isn’t possible, try eliminating caffeine from your night time routine.

Both types of insomnia can have a massive impact on how a person is able to function throughout their normal life. Research on Insomnia and Sleeping Aide has shown that people need seven or eight hours of sleep each day on a regular basis to be at their optimum level. This is why there is an increasing market for sleeping aids and there are a great number of commercial products looking to take advantage of this situation.

People don’t often stop to think about what can happen if they rely on something too long. Many can become so dependant on sleeping pills that without them they can’t get to sleep at all. In fact, some people can actually develop and addiction to sleeping pills. What most people will be unaware of is that sleeping pills don’t actually allow the body to get the rest it needs.

Stress is one of the main reasons why we can not get to sleep at night. As there are different kinds of stress there are different solutions as well. The most common form of stress is acute stress, it is what we are usually referring to when we say that we are stressed. It is the everyday stress, the big project at work, the problems with the spouse, the bad report card you have to read, etc.

This article should be exactly what you are looking for.

Did you know that lack of quality sleep may and certainly can affect ones personal relationship with others, mental and physical aptitudes, and make one literally ‘disconnected’ from the outside world? Sleeplessness not caused by rough deadlines for businessmen or from ‘overnight project to do’s for students but rather by a week or two to of sleeping difficulties until having it on a regular basis is somehow, a little bit considered as abnormal to the common. If you are suffering from the same point of view or maybe would like to avoid such disposition, then…

Getting a good and ample night sleep is essential for one to have a fresh and alert feeling towards the next morning. The opposite makes one unable to focus or concentrate and sometimes easily irritated. These feelings would tend to lead to the disruption of ones work or other matters that needs to be dealt with by the individual.
It is helpful to be able to recognize of whether the causes of your sleepless nights are just nothing but a normal scenario to everyone else or it is indeed something else! The following are considered as the top and most common sleeping disorders and sleeping problems any human might have.
**Sleep Apnea – a sleeping disorder in which one experiences halts in breathing while asleep.
**Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) – a sleep disorder that causes almost irresistible wanting or urge to move the legs and sometimes the arms.
**Narcolepsy – a neurological disorder that cause extreme sleepiness to a person to the extent that one falls asleep all of a sudden without warning.

Two examples of sleeping problems are insomnia and snoring. These two can be managed through self treatments like losing weight for snoring and improved sleep hygiene for insomnia.

Maybe the symptoms you are experiencing right now have not been mentioned above but basically going to the doctor is the last resort that I can suggest for sleeping is managed by none other than you yourself alone and so are your sleeping problems. Why won’t you try to have a self check and see the things that you can do or improve to alleviate the sleep troubles that you have? Because according to F. Scott Fitzgerald, the only(added) worst thing in the world is to try to sleep and not to.

I need tips on solving sleep problems?

For the past few days I haven’t been getting very much sleep. I have no trouble falling asleep at night, but whenever I wake up whether its due to a noise or something else, I just can’t get back to sleep. Any tips on how to correct this problem?

Answer
Try to clear your mind not think about anything. Snuggle into your sheets and close your eyes and stay still. Get comfortable so that you don’t move. Maybe count back from 100. Or play a card game or suduko or something that works your brain then try sleeping again. Also exercise during the day so that u are physically tired.
Then you shouldn’t wake up at all.
