How many times in the last few weeks have you tried to get your baby to sleep but to no avail? Millions of families go through this every night and when all else fails, baby sleep aids can help you to get some of the sleep you deserve and crave for.

The problem is that there are many baby sleep aids available, so which one do you choose? Here are a few examples of baby sleep aids that are commonly used and that you may wish to try to see if they’ll help to solve your baby’s sleeping problem..

Firstly, how can you go wrong with the good old blanket? At some point, every single one of us has us clung on to a blanket as babies. The comfort, security, and warmth will leave a baby feeling cozy and allow him to relax if he’s having trouble sleeping. It’s one of the best and most used baby sleep aids ever.

As a variation of this, you could use some other transitional object such as a teddy bear, or possibly mom’s t-shirt, so that your baby can settle down with a smell that he or she is comfortable with.

Unfortunately though, there are times when a blanket or other transitional object just won’t be enough, so you may wish to consider utilizing another baby sleep aid or baby sleep technique.

Night lights are also common baby sleep aids and can help make your child feel a little more comfortable in their dark surroundings. Although we may not know it, babies may often wake up and cry because they aren’t used to being alone and they don’t recognise their surroundings. A night light will give them security when they open their eyes. Being in familiar surroundings and being able to see the baby toys above the bed or stars on the ceiling will put them at ease.

Music or sounds are also great types of baby sleep aids you might want to try if you haven’t already. Soft, carefree music such as classical musical at low volumes is very soothing for a baby’s ears which can help get them to sleep. You could even leave this music playing through the entire night if it helped. Alternatively, white noise, which can sound horrible to adults, can be extremely soothing for a baby. A fan, having the television on, or even the sounds of nature …. birds, rain or whale sounds are very common. There are also white noise CD’s you can buy with the sound of a vacuum cleaner or washing machine etc. Again, these sound rather strange but really can help.

Although all of these are all capable baby sleep aids and many parents will testify to their effectiveness, it is also possible that none of them may work for your child. No two children are the same and so there is unfortunately no single cure-all for baby sleeping problems. However, with some tried and tested baby sleep techniques, a good sleep routine and the odd baby sleep aid thrown in for good measure, you and your baby can soon be getting the full nights sleep that you richly deserve.

Over-the-counter sleep aids that are safe for fourteen year old?

I’m having a really hard time getting to sleep and it’s affecting my grades and energy level (duh!)
I want to ask my mom to pick something up at the store, a sleep aid maybe, but I don’t know what.

Also, if you have any techniques to induce quick sleep, that would be helpful, as well.

Those are some good articles of sleep on Wikihow. They actually work pretty well. But if you still want the sleeping aid, then I heard that NyQuil is a good brand.

This article is intended for beginners, no advanced knowledge needed to understand this topic so why not give it a try?

Everybody knows that if it’s over-the-counter, it’s got to be safe. Or is it really? After all, prescription sleeping pills are a lot more tightly regulated by doctors and the FDA. Not to mention a lot more expensive.

Let’s just start with what everybody knows already about over-the-counter sleep aids. Just so everybody’s on the same page.

Firstly, the main ingredient of over-the-counter sleep aids is an antihistamine. Antihistamines are generally taken for allergies, but also make you feel very sleepy.
And yes, while they make you get to sleep faster, there is little evidence that they improve the quality of your sleep at all, much less help treat insomnia.

Meaning, if you really had good quality sleep, won’t you be productive in your following wake hours? That brings me to the second fact that everybody already knows about OTC sleep aids.

OTC sleep aids tend to cause “morning hangovers” or what is explained as residual next-morning sedation due to the fact that antihistamines have long half-lives. That simply means they stay very long in the bodies and therefore continue to cause drowsiness.

So most people usually try to live with that limitation by simply staying away from driving or handling heavy machinery. However, did you know that you would also have to put up with constipation and a racing heartbeat through your day? Did you also know that you could be in a state of confusion, delirium and have urinary retention? These are called anticholinergic side effects of antihistamines. That certainly wouldn’t do for that important office meeting next morning.

Thirdly, common over-the-counter sleep medications are Sleep-Eze, Sominex, Nytol, and Unison that are mostly either diphenhydramine or doxylamine antihistamines.
However, other common OTC sleep aids like Tylenol PM and Advil PM are actually combinations of the painkillers acetaminophen and ibuprofen with an antihistamine, diphenhydramine.

And that is why, the Medical Letter, which reviews drugs, recommends against using antihistamines for sleep. Some doctors say users of Tylenol PM may be taking acetaminophen they do not need. Acetaminophen overdoses can cause liver failure.

As for ibuprofen, common side effects mainly involve the gastrointestinal system. It can cause ulcerations, abdominal pain, cramping, nausea, gastritis, and even serious gastrointestinal bleeding. Sometimes, stomach ulceration and bleeding can occur without abdominal pain, and black tarry stools, weakness, and dizziness upon standing may be the only signs of internal bleeding.

And finally, back to the premise that if it’s over the counter, it’s got to be safe. That is truly the costliest and harmful fallacy that everybody has believed about OTC sleep aids being safer than prescription sleeping pills.

The reason is this. OTC sleep aids are not regulated and therefore, prone to abuse. If the OTC sleep aids were used as they were originally intended for i.e. to treat allergies or relieve mild pain that usually resolve within days, their sedative side effects would have been limited.

And because using OTC sleep aids does not require a doctor’s consultation and supervision, potential drug interactions would not have been flagged out and underlying serious side effects would have gone undetected.

Also, you can develop a tolerance for over-the-counter sleep aids after using them for just a few days. You may find quickly that you’ll need to pop in more pills each time to accomplish the same effect.

Last but not least, a so-called transcient insomnia may progress into a chronic insomnia if the root of the problem is not resolved. A slippery slope indeed. Don’t we all agree that insomnia is just a symptom of an underlying problem? And for many of us occasional insomniacs, it’s always triggered by something called stress.

Here’s a tip. Today, researchers have found that the best treatment for insomnia with the highest success rates is to change our thought patterns to then change our behaviors into those that induce sleep. So, it’s really all in the mind.

What are the effects going to be on a woman’s child if she took sleep-aids before discovering she was pregnant?

I may or may not be pregnant (if so, probably around 6 weeks), and I am worried because I’ve used a sleep-aid (melatonin) at least once or twice a week during these last 6 weeks. If I am pregnant, have I caused my child a lot of harm?

Answer
Melatonin is something your body produces naturally but decreases with age. The baby will be fine.

This article should guide you very deeply into the topic, simply follow the points described.

Sleeping is an important necessity for our body just like food. It’s one of our main sources of energy that make it possible for us to last throughout the day. Some people think sleep is unimportant. Who says that sleeping is merely lying in your bed on your back? This is how we regain our most prized energy in life! It is so important to get a good night sleep that we oftentimes seek out special aids to help us in this valuable task. Natural aids can be extremely important in helping us get the necessary sleep we need.

Sleep is an integral part of our daily lives and it involves two brain processes. There is the restorative process, which occurs while we are awake and which causes us to crave sleep at night. Then there is a second process called the Circadian biological clock process. This is also found in our brain and controls our sleep timing and the day-night cycle. The part of the brain which is the SCN or the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus is the reason behind why we tend to feel sleepy at night and stay awake during the day. It is influenced by light so that, at night when it is dark, the motivation for sleep is stronger. That’s why there are people who can’t sleep with the lights on!

Achieving continuous sleep for some becomes a struggle. This is the reason for sleep aids. As we age, we experience many things that disturb our sleep. This makes it really hard for us to continue with an uninterrupted night of sleep. This also leads to a less active person the next day! We all need to have an undisturbed and sound sleep in order to have the energy to stay active and alert throughout the day. Still, achieving continuous sleep is sometimes very hard if not impossible.

Sleep aids are often used because, as we get older, we experience many things that disturb our sleep. Insufficient sleep makes it difficult for one to exercise and this can reduce the benefit of hormones that are released during sleep. There are approximately 100,000 sleep-related vehicle crashes each year and these result in the loss of nearly 1,500 lives. It’s true! These are all cause by the serious consequences of sleep deprivation. If a person is having trouble sleeping, a sleep aid may actually save their life the next day.

It’s very important to get acquainted with some natural sleep aid tips in order to avoid the problems that can come from sleep deprivation. These sleep aids can help to remedy the many difficulties in sleeping for individuals of different age brackets. Even as a baby, one can already experience difficulty in having a good night sleep. Babies usually have a disorganized pattern of sleep and this can make Mommy really tired herself! Still, at an early age, you can still start correcting that possible sleep disorder in the future. There are many natural sleep aids that can do this.

Of course, you wouldn’t want your child growing up with an abnormal sleep pattern. It’s best, as early as the second month, to help your baby get a good night sleep and to become more regular each night. Let them sleep on a firm mattress and put them to bed when they are drowsy. Babies prefer being rocked or fed to sleep. You can try using these aids for your kids so that they start out sleeping the right way. A good head start on their sleep might turn out to be a big help in the future.

Because a large number of people, especially those who are active, start having difficulties in sleeping, it is really very important to set up good habits. If you are experiencing certain difficulties in sleeping, such as nightmares or tossing and turning, you may benefit from a sleep aid. Having difficulty in falling asleep, remaining asleep, or early morning awakenings and develop into bigger problems. Seek out some sleep aids or try seeing a doctor and ask for some advice. If it is not treated early, it might lead to sleep apnea or another serious condition. Staying away from bad habits that lead to certain difficulties in sleeping is not really that tough after all. The benefits are far more rewarding!

Many aspects have been covered in this article so that you can benefit from an extended research.

Prescription sleeping medication like Rozerem seems promising without the problems of dependence and rebound insomnia. However, people continue to look to OTC sleep aids as alternatives. These may not boast the same effectiveness as prescription sleeping medication and their hangover side effects are infamous. Here are the 5 actual reasons observed why OTC sleep aids are still very popular.

1.	It’s convenient. That’s obvious. The most popular ones are the antihistamines that have FDA’s approval for use as OTC sleep aids so you don’t have to get a doctors’ prescription. It is a recognized fact today that having the occasional or transcient insomnia due to work or lifestyle circumstances is common. OTC sleep aids are recognized to be useful in such situations. The only problem is that some people might start to rely on them out of habit and take them long term instead.

2.	There are less surprises. These antihistamines have been around for a long time, much longer than the popular prescription sleeping medications like Ambien and Lunesta. Antihistamines are decades old while non-benzodiazepines like Ambien emerged in the 1990s. Hence, the probability of unknown dangerous side effects is much lower for antihistamine OTC sleep aids.

As it is, doctors are usually wary of new sleeping medications that have not stood the test of time. This is one of the 2 major objections from prescribers that any drug company faces when marketing a new medication. Painful lessons were learnt with the withdrawal of drugs like Vioxx, the painkiller and Avandia for diabetes.

It must be noted however that supplement OTC sleep aids differ from antihistamines. Supplements do not require FDA approval as over the counter sleep aids and hence, long term safety have not been documented all along.

3.	The lesser evil. The side effects of OTC sleep aids are deemed the lesser evil. Most people put up with the infamous hangover side effect or have simply adapted how they take the OTC sleep aids e.g. smaller doses or just sleep earlier and longer. Granted these hangovers and other related side effects can be extreme for some people. However, next day drowsiness seems less bizarre than unconsciously sleepwalking on prescription sleeping medications. FDA has recently required that stronger warnings were added to sleeping medications’ labels about these side effects that can be life threatening.

4.	Cheaper than a can of coke. An OTC sleep aid costs only 30-40 cents compared to Lunesta at $3-$4 a tab. People are happy to resolve their sleeplessness at lower cost and lower risks. Cost is always a major deciding factor if the additional benefits of prescription sleeping medication don’t measure up to the price difference.

5.	Instant lifestyle. Change is constant and fast for this sleepless 24/7 generation. We want both instant gratification and instant solutions for our stress filled lives. OTC sleep aids are readily pocketed along with our blackberrys and ipods.

It goes without saying that there is no magic panacea for insomnia. Over the counter sleep aids are best used for the occasional insomnia at recommended doses. You will develop tolerance if used longer than necessary. As with prescription sleeping medications, OTC sleep aids must be taken responsibly i.e. being aware of possible drug interactions with any current medication, resolving the underlying cause of insomnia, etc.

Could sleep aids be causing what seems to be a slowing of reaction and thinking?

I take Diphenhydramine for sleepless nights and I took it last night. This morning I woke up and felt groggy in my mind. It was hard to wake up and I feel like I’m not functioning as well as I usually do. Could sleep aids be causing me real trouble? I try not to use them unless I have to, and I do sometimes have to. Help!

Answer
They have come a long way since diphenhydramine. Sleep aids are more gentle now and more forgiving the next day.Ambien lets me sleep and wake up without a “hangover”.
Usually what happened to me was by the time I realized it was going to be a sleepless night and take the benadryl it would still be in my system when i got up. Making me tired with a detached feeling.

Three of the most commonly used natural sleep aids include kava, melatonin and valerian. These are herbal products that help the body naturally wind down in order to prepare for a full night’s rest. The majority of these items can be purchased over the counter and typically do not need a doctor’s prescription. However, it is best to consult with your doctor before buying any natural sleeping aids. He/she will help diagnose your particular sleep disorder (or if your case is serious enough to warrant the use of natural sleep aids), which can help you figure out which type of natural sleep aid will work best for your needs.

Kava is an herb that serves to naturally combat feelings of anxiety. Having anxiety is a common symptom related to insomnia, which many people suffer from. In natural sleep aids, kava is available for use as a liquid extract, tablet, capsule or beverage. When consumed, kava works as a sedative, which helps insomniacs fall asleep and stay asleep. However, it is important to note that this natural sleep aid should not be used long term since it can cause severe liver damage.

Other natural sleep aids include melatonin, which is actually a naturally recurring hormone in the human body. This hormone works to regulate a person’s sleep cycle and wake cycle. This makes it an obvious choice for use as natural sleep aids. Melatonin comes in capsule or tablet form and is supposed to be taken 30 minutes before going to bed.

Valerian is another herbal product in the natural sleep aids category. This herb can be found in tablet, capsule, tea or liquid extract form and typically takes between 2-3 weeks to take full effect. Valerian should be taken one hour before going to bed.

i am fighting an addiction to opiates and i am having trouble sleeping, what sort of sleep aids could i use?

i have always had trouble sleeping but it is even worse now that i am trying to get clean. the lack of sleep is making it very hard for me to stay clean and it is very frustrating!! i know doctors dont like to give people like me sleep aids but i fear if i dont get something to help me i am going to falter. if anyone knows of a non-habit forming sleep aid i would love to know about it. nothing seems to work!

Answer
This is a question I have answered many times in my practice as an addiction counselor, but the sad part is, the best method varies with each individual.
First, I want to tell you that seeking help through ANY source is a positive step, and I commend you for trying to cope with these stressors that you have identified as relapse triggers.
Here’s how I break it down:
1. Understand that your brain chemistry is changing, trying to return to normal. Abstinence from ALL mood altering chemicals, including caffeine and nicotine, will speed that process. (Sorry, benadryl is a mood altering chemical.)
2. Be patient with your body and brain. You’ve put them through hell. They WILL recover, but in their own time.
3. Exercise is good, in moderation. Google Search “John Ratey, M.D.” He recently published a book called “Spark” that has an excellent chapter on addiction. Follow his advice to wear out your body and have it ready for sleep when time comes.
4. Melatonin has worked well for some of my clients, but remember, everyone’s results will vary, and it usually takes at least two weeks of taking the supplement daily before it begins to take effect.
5. If you have access to health care, ask your doctor about Trazodone. I’ve seen recovering alcoholics use it as a sleep aid before, but I AM NOT A DOCTOR. Again, ask your physician. Trazodone is available by prescription only.
6. Meditation can, if practiced consistently, reduce anxiety, increase focus, and make sleeping easier. I have seen the Zen tradition known as Vipassina change lives, including my own.
The last and, in my opinion best advice I can give, is to find a 12-Step group. Narcotics Anonymous has web sites for most major metropolitan areas, and their sites all have lists of meetings.
I hope this helps.

If you are having problems sleeping then you can look at all your options. If you don’t want to go with an over the counter product or even go to your Dr. you can begin with a few natural sleep aids. You have a lot of alternatives with this type of sleep aid. Some possibly able to help you better than others. Make sure you read the information for each one sleep aid before you decided to use it.

The first one you can try is called Valerian. This appears to ease stress; it calms you down and levels out emotions. Or maybe a tea from valerian, chamomile, and other herbaceous plant made into teas can have a calming effect and they will help you sleep.

If these do not work, or you don’t like tea, you could try applying massage aromatherapy. If you go this route you can ask the massage healer what kind of oils will act best for sleep. This might help you relax after a long day or a long week. But if you are experiencing trouble sleeping every night, then this might not be the good thing for you.

If you are still searching natural methods to assist you sleep, try setting up a regular routine. Get up at the same time and go to be at the same time. You could also stretch prior to go to bed by moving your arms and legs.

Perhaps you may listen to some music or read. This may aid keep your brain off of other matters. Or stop thinking, let your brain clear itself from everything you have done for the day. This might be hard, but it could work. If this still does not work, perhaps check if you are drinking a lot of caffein prior to bedtime. Cutting caffein from your diet might be arduous, but think about doing so. If you do not want to go that far, perhaps stop yourself from having any caffein related products a few hrs prior to go to bed.

We are all different. So something that works for one individual might not act for someone other. These are all ways to try to get back to a normal sleep pattern without taking anything. If these do not act, or aren’t what you are searching then you should think about essaying something else.

Tip: Eat magnesium-rich foods – Magnesium is a natural sedative. Deficiency of magnesium can result in difficulty sleeping, constipation, muscle tremors or cramps, anxiousness, irritability, and pain. It has as well been use for people with restless leg syndrome.
