With a large percentage of the public suffering from sleep disorders and
it’s no wonder why many people cannot concentrate, are forgetful and are generally not functioning at an optimal level on a daily basis. Many people suffering from these sleep disorders and rely on sleep aids to place a band-aid on the problem. The problem with that is that there could be many uncomfortable side effects and these substances can become addictive.

Our bodies definitely need sleep and although it may vary from person to person
it is best to average from six to eight hours of sleep every day. Also the release of your natural growth hormone is released during your sleep time which enables your body to stay healthier and more youthful. You will notice in yourself that if you don’t sleep well for more than a few days there is a dazed look in your eyes, your skin will look a little tired and dull and your attention to detail definitely diminishes. Your body needs the proper sleep to keep you young, healthy and sustain life.

So what can you do, maybe naturally to assist your body to calm down, relax your brain and body so that you can enjoy a healthy relaxing peaceful sleep and enable your body to replenish itself with a good sleep night after night.

Food is a very important part contributing to your health and wellbeing. It also plays a major role in enabling the body to release the correct chemicals, naturally into the body to enable good solid sleep. For one, an amino acid called tryptophan, which is found in turkey, is the precursor to melatonin and serotonin, the natural sleep hormones. You see there is some truth that turkey makes you tired as illustrated when Uncle George falls asleep on the couch after Thanksgiving Day dinner.

There are also other foods that can be eaten in the early evening that can assist your body to release the correct chemicals and set up the proper conditions for sleep.

Firstly don’t eat after 7 pm. A large meal after this hour will take time to digest and may cause heartburn or indigestion which will affect your sleep patterns. It’s best to eat small portions or snacks two or more hours before bedtime. Try eating a small piece of cheese, a couple of slices of turkey, a few tablespoons of pure yogurt containing no sugar, or a handful of sunflower seeds, all of which contain or assist your body in producing tryptophan .

Dairy products also assist your the body to induce sleep. The old saying a glass of warm milk will put you to sleep does have significant. Milk and products containing calcium help the brain to manufacture tryptophan. Also the mineral magnesium which is a natural sedative can be found in wheat bran, brewers yeast, seaweed, almonds and cashews. Other things you can do are to always have a complex carbohydrate with a small piece of protein at dinner Also avoid snacks with sugar and stimulants like coffee and soft drink after 2 pm.

So when you are sitting there on the couch trying to relax from your long busy day don’t think about your sleep disorder or think about running to the medicine cabinet for another sleep aid but instead try having a cup a Chamomile tea and a handful of cashews, even try warming the cashews for 20 seconds in the microwave. It relaxing, soothing and will help your body sleep and stay more healthy and youthful.

Is chammomile tea my only option for herbal sleep aids while breastfeeding?

I’ve been stressed lately due to some medical issues my baby is having. I can’t fall asleep at night, sometimes until 2am and I desperately need it b/c my baby still wakes up a few times per night. I’m wondering if anyone has used chammomile while breastfeeding or any other homeopathic type remedies. I will check with my dr. before using any herbs but I want to know what has worked for others. Thanks!

Answer
http://neonatal.ttuhsc.edu/cgi-bin/discus/discus.cgi?pg=topics&access=guest This website is invaluable, the phd has been studiying the pharmacolgy of breast milk and the affect of medication/herbals on it for 20 years.

Chamomile is fine to take, so is valerian. People do not recommend valerian to pregnant woman because there supoosedly isn’t enough research that only means theres not enough American research. European herbal sources say it’s fine but to not take for more than two weeks straight. They speak about high doses, a cup of tea at night wouldn’t hurt you or the baby. You could also try skullcap. I follow my Italian herbalists instructions during my pregnancy snd took valerian; I slept very well and my three month old baby is healthy.

Sleep Problem Cure

Despite all the sleeping pills and specially formulated teas on the market, there is a natural sleep problem cure that will not cost you a single penny to implement into your life. If that sounds like what you have been looking for, consider just a few very basic changes you could make right now to start solving your sleeping issues.

1. Go to bed at the same time, every single night.

Whatever it is that causes you to have erratic sleeping schedules, it’s time to make some changes. Your body needs a routine sleep schedule that falls within your natural body rhythms. This is proven science here! If you are sleeping at odd times or only allowing a few hours a night, it’s time to work out a schedule so you are at least sleeping at the same times each day.

2. Make your bed a sleeper’s paradise.

The environment in which you are lying down is crucial to the quality of sleep you will receive. Make sure the mattress you are sleeping on is comfortable to your body and that the sheets and blankets are of the right textures and thickness to keep you comfortable. Adjust the air flow so you are comfortable, not too hot or cold. Get rid of the TV and other distractions and make your bedroom a designated sleeping zone.

While creating the optimal sleeping environment and lying down at the same time every night may not be the instant sleep problem cure to all of your problems, it is a starting point that will get you headed in the right direction while you find other methods for long term relief.

Can stress and lack of sleep cause memory problems?

I have had some bad sleeping patterns during the past years (sleeping late, waking up early and not having any specific sleep and wake up time and not getting enough sleep during the night) and I have also had stress and anxiety problems. Recently I have noticed that at times I have trouble remembering things that I could easily remember in the past….

Is lack of sleep and stress/anxiety related to memory problems? Can fixing the sleeping patterns and changing life-style help to improve the problem? I’m kind of worried is this problem dangerous? How can I fix it?
I remember once I even forgot my girlfriend’s name while she was sitting right next to me. I have started forgetting very simple stuff (Such as name, places etc…) although I’m still young (27). Could it all be due to my bad sleeping habits and stressful life-style?

Answer
Absolutely…yes.
To function normally the brain has to have a rest, just like a battery needs time to recharge.
