Summary of some of the natural and simple free sleep aid remedies described in greater detail and with recipes and instructions at www.sleep-aid-tips.com

Balance and perspective:

At certain times, insomnia may result from stress.

Massage techniques can ease tense necks, aching shoulders and upright torsos, and face massage can be an instant calmer.

Some stress is an inevitable part of life, but when you need to achieve a state of inner calm, a range of meditation and visualization techniques can help you work through your insecurities, worries and anxieties.

With practice, stress can be diminished so that it is no longer a cause of sleepless nights.

A calm environment:

Lack of sleep can also be exacerbated by external factors such as noise, a “busy” atmosphere in the bedroom, or simply the wrong type of mattress.

By making the best of your physical environment, you can reduce or remove many of these detrimental factors.

Following the principles of feng shui you can arrange your bedroom space to best effect and remove clutter that can clog free-flowing “chi” or energy.

Choosing a calming room décor and lighting scheme can soothe the senses, while establishing a bed-time ritual can make sleep a pleasant and comforting experience to look forward to.

Pampering treatments:

In view of the many demands made by daily life, it is essential to find time to switch off from cares and worries in the evening, and indulge in some personal quality time.

However busy you are, you should take time to wind down before trying to go to sleep, otherwise your mind will still be buzzing with the concerns of the day.

Surrounding yourself with gentle candlelight and sinking into a hot bath laced with aromatherapy oils or herbal sachets can go a long way to soothe and prepare your body for sleep.

Essential oils such as lavender and clary sage added to the water help to diminish tension headaches and muscular aches, while bath bags or bath salts made with chamomile help to ease stress.

You can also use the natural energies from flowers and herbs as a base for warming foot baths, soporific sleep pillows and effective sleep tinctures.

Bedtime snacks:

You ate dinner at 6pm; it’s now 11.30pm and you’re ready to go to bed, but now you’re feeling hungry and thirsty again.

What do you do? Instead of raiding the refrigerator for a substantial and perhaps indigestible meal, it is better to opt for a light snack, such as toast with a topping and perhaps a hot, comforting beverage.

Try to avoid tea and coffee as they are stimulants and will tend to keep you awake if you drink them late in the day.

Instead, herbal teas prepared for their sedative properties may be sipped in the evening, while warm, milky drinks are ideal for consumption before bed – milk contains peptides that calm the system.

The occasional hot toddy can also provide a delicious way to wind down, and this is particularly good on a cold winter’s evening, especially if you are suffering from a cold.

Calming the psyche:

Sometimes it is difficult to sleep due to excessive emotions, such as fear, excitement or anxiety. Crystal therapy can help to calm heartache; choosing the right stones can also calm restlessness and anxiety, and help to regulate sleep patterns.

Crystals can be helpful when bad dreams and nightmares are keeping you awake, as can techniques such as visualizing a guardian angel or spiritual protector. When you have perplexing or mystifying dreams, it can be very helpful to write down what happened before you forget, so that you can ponder and try to analyze them later on.

Working towards an understanding of your dreams adds an enjoyable richness to what can be the fascinating pageant of sleep.

Exercise to relax:

Keeping the body moving is essential for good sleep – without exercise, you 3will not be physically tired enough to rest at night. Aerobic activities such as walking and cycling exercise the heart and tone the muscles, while some specific yoga techniques provide an excellent way to stretch and relax.
Instant fixes:

If all else fails and you are still awake in the dead of night, try some or all, of these quick insomnia cures:

•	Lie on your back with your knees propped up on a small pillow
•	Sleep with your head pointing in the direction North
•	Get up the same time every morning and go to bed at the same time
every night for a week
•	Visualize yourself in a peaceful place, such as a field full of wildflowers
with a gentle breeze blowing, or near a gently flowing stream where you can see fish swimming past you.
•	Visualize a boring scenario, such as a lecture you have no interest in
•	Read out loud the names and numbers from the phone book
•	Reserve your bedroom and the bed as a place for sleep only
•	Wiggle your toes gently until you fall asleep
•	Rub your stomach lightly
•	Cut up a mild onion, place in a jar by the bed and sniff before retiring.
•	Think of ten wonderful things that have happened to you today
•	Squeeze all your muscles together tightly for a few minutes and
then relax. Threaten yourself that “If I am not asleep within the next 10 minutes, I will get up and…” clean the oven, or clean the fridge….whatever you really hate doing… When your brain knows you really mean it – this will scare you to sleep to avoid a nasty chore!

Avoid these sleep deterrents:

•	Drinking excessive alcohol
•	Smoking cigarettes
•	Drinking caffeine
•	Taking long naps in the afternoon
•	Watching disturbing films prior to bed
•	Reading mentally stimulating books prior to bed
•	Playing video games
•	Listening to fast paced or loud, stimulating music.

Do gas stations sell sleep aids of any kind?

I have to get up at 5:45 AM tomorrow morning and I woke up at 11:00 AM this morning so obviously I’m going to need something to knock me out and put me to sleep. I have to ride a bike, because I don’t have a car, so the closest place is a gas station, and I want to know if anyone knows if a gas station normally sells NyQuil or any other kind of sleep aid? It’s a Presto, a rather large station.

Answer
Call the station and ask.

How do you usually sleep at night? Are you able to sleep just as soon as you lay your head down on the bed? Maybe you’re finding it quite difficult to fall asleep and you keep spending the night tossing and turning. If so, you are one of the many people who is not so lucky about dozing off at night. If aren’t so lucky, you may have to resort to a number of other possibilities that can help you to sleep properly and lead you to a more healthy life in the near future. Of course, some of the best possibilities include natural sleep aids.

People prefer natural sleep aids because they don’t carry the stigma that prescription drugs may have. Prescription drugs are often associated with addictive tendencies and they make people nervous to be taken in excess. You had hoped you would be able to relax more and instead you end up climbing the walls! That is not the solution that most people want. Instead, natural sleep aids have become much more popular.

Because herbal and aromatic products are extremely popular today, it is extremely common to take them for any sleep related problem. For instance, they are great in helping us to counter that headache or work stress that is often caused by too little sleep or too much anxiety. Aromatic and herbal varieties like Chamomile, Passion Flower, Lemon Balm and Valerian Root are just a few of the more common herbal medications that can help your sleeping problem. Each herb is used in a different way and can be chosen for its convenience depending on what your preferences are.

Chamomile is typically used in tea and is especially nice because it helps with both stress and better digestion. It is traditionally added to hot water and the mild floral scent helps people with insomnia. Today, a variety of chamomile teas are being sold readily and are often used as a sleep aid or in combination with other treatments.

Other herbs include Lavender, Passion Flower and Lemon Balm. Lavender, though it can’t be taken internally as a tea, is popular for its aromatic oil. It is usually rubbed on the neck and wrists before the person goes to sleep. Another herb is Passion Flower which is a great medication for insomnia. It is widely considered to be a gentle sedative and is sometimes used as an oil for mild muscle relaxation, a tea for drinking or caplets for swallowing. Lemon Balm is used in tea preparations also. It is boiled in water and, after straining, its leaves produce a medicinal effect. It also produces an oil which can be used in the treatment of insomnia.

Valerian Root is a rather controversial herb because it has been found to be somewhat addictive. Some people tend to use it for long period of continuous sleep and become Dependant upon it. Still, it is considered to be a potent remedy for many people. A safer option may be the natural solution of warm milk. Although it isn’t an aromatic or an herbal remedy, milk can be served warm and can help to induce sleep through its amino acid, Trypthopan.

All of these herbs mentioned are just a few of the choices of natural sleep aids that can help to combat the difficulties you may have with sleeping. The most important aid is to establish a healthy schedule! A good uninterrupted night’s sleep can assure an individual of a long productive day at work or at home. It enables him or her to regain their lost energy after a grueling day. It also helps in rejuvenating a person’s sore and exhausted body. This makes you ready to face the world with a big smile and a renewed source of energy.

Every individual needs ample time for sleep. It helps us repair the muscles that wear out during the day and to fend off illnesses and accidents that might otherwise have befallen us. Everybody needs at least 8 hours of continuous and sound sleep. A little attention and care in your schedule and you should be able to manage quite well. Then, you will be well on your way to achieving the most natural remedy of all!

How can I stop taking antidepressants and Sleep aids without getting sick?

I have been on sleepaids and antidepressants for a long time and I dont want to be on them anymore I have tried to stop taking them and became very sick. I want these pills out of my system I feel like a zombie. Anyone got any ideas?

Answer
Gregg, have you talked to your Doc about how these meds make you feel? And have you discussed trying different meds?
I started on anti-depressants in my mid-20’s. I was noncompliant on my meds well into my 30’s. I’d get better, and think I didn’t need them anymore and go off them. Then another depressive episode would hit and I’d wait until I was crying all the time, wsn’t bathing for days at a time and was feeling helpless and hopeless before I’d go back to my Therapist and get back on meds.
If you are seeing a Primary Care Physician instead of a Psychiatrist for medication management, I urge you strongly to go see a Psy for meds. They are so much more knowledgeable about what drugs work in combination, what the newest drugs are. And be HONEST about how the drugs make you feel. If it’s now working after a couple or three weeks TELL the Doc so you can switch to something that DOES work or that has fewer side effects.
Depression, or Bi-Polar Disorder or any other Mental Health issue is NOT a character flaw and cannot be overcome with WILL and hope. It has to be dealt with by balancing your brain’s chemistry and sometimes with talk therapy, too.

Are those nights of restless tossing and turning becoming more and more frequent? Everyone has nights when they just can’t seem to get to sleep; stresses from work, kids and life in general can leave you with sleep deprivation. The average human being will spend one third of their life sleeping and that should be a time of recovery and relaxation. Unfortunately, that is not the case for most adults and we turn to medicinal sleep aides as a way to get more restful sleep.

Now the bad news, sleep aides are not always a side effect free solution. Sleep aids cause many adults to suffer from drowsiness during the day, forgetfulness and drug dependency. These side effects make be more of a risk than losing the sleep to begin with. However, there are many natural sleep aides that provide the same recuperative rest without the harmful side effects. By using naturally calming herbs and plant extracts these natural sleep aides can be a preferable solution at a fraction of the cost of prescription or over the counter sleep aides.

Herbal remedies that contain the proper combination of herbal extracts and amino acids will maximize the restoration of the body during sleep. Many of the ingredients that help to cure sleep deprivation also stabilize blood sugar levels, suppress nighttime food cravings and boost the body’s fat burning capabilities. So with the right herbal remedy for sleep deprivation the body will recovery to a healthier state and may even lose weight.

Written by Chicagohealers.com practitioner Dr Steven Arculeo, DC –

Although an adequate night’s rest is essential for maintaining good health, forty percent of this country’s population has trouble sleeping, according to a 1,500 person survey conducted by Consumer Reports. Memory loss, trouble concentrating, and emotional instability are just some of the unfortunate effects of troubled sleeping. Sources of lost rest include lack of a nighttime routine, poor diet and pre-bedtime eating habits, and significant life stress. Whatever the cause, though, the following are natural and practical solutions from Dr. John Schaaf of Peak Performance/ Healthsource of Old Town to help identify and correct sleep disturbance.

Diet Eat dinner at least three hours before bedtime. If this isn’t possible, go light for supper or eat a snack, avoiding greasy or high calorie foods that take more time and energy to digest. Abstain from drinking alcoholic beverages at night. Alcohol can prevent your body from reaching the deep stages of sleep, which robs you of its recuperative benefits. In fact, don’t drink a lot of any liquid around bedtime. Getting up to use the bathroom repeatedly can be a big sleep disturbance.

Meditation One of the primary aims of any meditative technique is to relax your mind and body in general, which is a prerequisite to a satisfying night of rest. No matter what type of meditation you ultimately choose, the holistic living advisors at Life Positive Magazine say to find a position most comfortable for you, concentrate on the darkness behind your eyelids, let your thoughts flow freely, chant any mantra, and meditate for at least ten minutes.

Herbs: Taking herbs is a great way to ensure the proper function and balance of systems in your body which affect sleep. Valerian, hops and chamomile are among the most common sleep inducing herbs, but consult a certified nutritionist or a herbologist to ensure that you’re taking the proper dosage and administration.

Chiropractic: Issues such as limited range of motion, headaches or numbness in the hands or feet can often make a good night’s rest impossible. Get checked by your chiropractor to address any of these issues, or to determine if they might cause sleep trouble in the future.

Invest in a new bed If you’re still sleeping on grandma’s old hand me down mattress, throw it out and get a new one. Different mattresses are made for different kinds of sleepers, so look around for a shop with salespeople willing to work out things like size, firmness, and the right type of box spring. The right rest surface can go a long way toward relieving sleep problems.

Establish a nighttime routine Many late night habits can contribute to sleep problems, so make an effort to form new and more beneficial ones. Go to bed at the same time every night. Contrary to popular belief, the body does not adjust quickly to changes in sleep schedules.

Shake the urge to watch nighttime TV, since watching television just before bed stimulates areas of the brain that keep you awake. A new study published in the Journal of Sleep and Sleep Disorders Research says that most Americans let television, and not a person’s need for a full eight hour’s rest, dictate when they go to sleep. Respect your body’s natural rhythm and turn off the tube.

This is a system of multidisciplinary clinics offering chiropractic, progressive rehabilitation and other services to address your complete health and wellness needs.
Finally, I’d like to thank you for reading this article and i hope it was helpful information.

I’ve been having sleeping problems for a few months now. Why am i getting so paranoid and cant sleep?

I first noticed this when i would come home from boarding school freshman year. When I would come home, no matter how hard I tried, i could not fall asleep. I felt so paranoid about where I was, and would just walk around the house all night and watch TV. Why can’t I fall asleep, and what should I do so I can get the proper amount of sleep I need to function?

Answer
The strange surroundings, as crazy as it may seem because you are actually at home, can have an effect.
I suggest the following for exam prep, but it may well work here.
Sit in a chair where you can relax, are not going to be disturbed. Arms and legs uncrossed, and just relax. Think of somewhere peaceful you would like to be, the beach for example.
Count very slowly, from 1 to 10, as you take yourself on an imaginary journey. Let all the tensions and stress flow out as you relax and get closer, until finally, at number 10, you arrive.
Before you go to bed, a warm milky drink, (no caffeine) don’t read or watch TV, instead listen to relaxing music, (no vocals) , pan pipes are ideal, and just let yourself drift off into a peaceful sleep.
Hope this helps,
mike t.

Anyone have an autistic child with sleep problems?

My son is 4 and is autistic. He has a horrible sleeping pattern. I know it is common in these kids to have sleep problems. Does anyone know what I can do to help him sleep? I work full time and go to school and I am exhausted. I feel like I still have a newborn some days. Please answer only if you are a professional or have children with this disorder. Thanks a bunch in advance for any ideas?

Answer
Dear Exhausted Mom:
If you are able to afford a behavior analyst who can come into your home to help you with techniques seek one out. It can be anywhere between $60 to $125 dollars depending on where you live.
You can look into respite from your state provider (Mental Health-Mental Retardation or Dept of Childwelfare) to get help to pay for someone to come to help you or to pay for the behavior analyst.
Talk to your pediatrician.
Good Luck.

Many people struggle to achieve a good night’s sleep. While experts recommend going to sleep and waking up at the same time every day, that is not always feasible. Natural methods work with the body to combat sleeping problems. Maintaining a proper sleeping environment, reading, exercising, and using Melatonin, work together to optimize sleep.

If you suffer from a sleeping problem, analyze your bedroom. Is the room dark enough? Is the temperature comfortable? If your room is too hot, you may have trouble sleeping. Furthermore, a hot room causes headaches. This makes it more challenging to fall, and stay, asleep. For those who are sensitive to noise, traffic sounds and other outdoor noises affect sleep. Earplugs help to block out those external noises. If you still cannot eliminate external noises, muffle those sounds with internal noises. As an example, the sound of a fan helps lull people to sleep. As a bonus, a fan keeps your bedroom at a steady, comfortable temperature. You should also view your bedroom as a place to sleep – not a place to work. If you bring work to bed, your brain will associate your bed with ongoing activity, instead of sleep.

Reading also prepares the body and brain for sleep. However, you might find yourself engrossed in a novel that you cannot put down. If that occurs, try reading a short story before bed. You will still get your nightly read, but with less stimulation to the brain. Because you have finished the story, you will no longer anticipate what comes next.

Choosing the wrong time to exercise also affects the sleep cycle. It is typically best to work out in the morning or afternoon. Nighttime exercise raises the core body temperature and stimulates the body. If you only have time to exercise at night, Yoga and Pilates are good options. Yoga and Pilates train the body to develop proper breathing techniques. Proper breathing is needed so the body relaxes. Because these forms of exercise focus on relaxation, breathing and stretching, they help the body prepare for sleep.

Melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep patterns and wake cycles, also combats sleeping disorders. Melatonin levels decrease as you age. If you suffer from insomnia or jet lag, your body has reduced levels of this naturally-occurring hormone. However, Melatonin is available as a dietary supplement so you can replenish what you lost. Melatonin combats sleeping problems by helping the body establish normal sleep patterns. If you have trouble falling asleep, health-care practitioners recommend the immediate-release formula. If you have trouble staying asleep, take the sustained-release formula. Melatonin is available in different doses, is approved for long-term and short-term use, and is effective when taken approximately 20-30 minutes before going to sleep. Pain also causes sleepless nights. Studies are being conducted to analyze if Melatonin eases the pain of other health issues like cluster headaches. In this case, Melatonin addresses the underlying pain issue that contributes to sleeping problems.

The best advice to combat sleeplessness is to listen to your body. You know and understand your body better than anyone. Your body will tell you when it is tired and needs rest. Listen to your body’s signals and use them to your advantage. In conjunction with the above remedies, you can combat sleeping problems.

Insomnia affects almost one third of the population – combat sleeping problems with natural remedies and by changing some of your lifestyle habits.

I have been having more problems than usual in my sleep habits and it is affecting my wife now, any help?

I often awaken violently at night, typically confused about whether I am awake or dreaming. Sometimes I remember these episodes and sometimes I don’t. I have always had problems sleeping but am worried because these episodes have been happening with greater frequency. My wife says it is quite scary and is afraid I’m either going to give myself a heart attack or her. Besides the safety issue, I worry that I am causing her to have such disruptive sleep now as well. What is going on and is this something that can be treated without medication? I am a thin, active male, 34, almost 35 years old who has had various sleep problems since I was a child- insomnia and night terrors mostly.

Answer
If you have health insurance, get a complete sleep study done. These things are expensive, but well worth it because they can often pin-point the problem and provide solutions for it. I know this is kind of depressing, but perhaps if you have a spare bed in your home, you and your wife should sleep seperately for a while until it is resolved. Talk to her about it!

Sleeping is an important necessity for our body just like food. It’s one of our main sources of energy that make it possible for us to last throughout the day. Some people think sleep is unimportant. Who says that sleeping is merely lying in your bed on your back? This is how we regain our most prized energy in life! It is so important to get a good night sleep that we oftentimes seek out special aids to help us in this valuable task. Natural aids can be extremely important in helping us get the necessary sleep we need.

Sleep is an integral part of our daily lives and it involves two brain processes. There is the restorative process, which occurs while we are awake and which causes us to crave sleep at night. Then there is a second process called the Circadian biological clock process. This is also found in our brain and controls our sleep timing and the day-night cycle. The part of the brain which is the SCN or the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus is the reason behind why we tend to feel sleepy at night and stay awake during the day. It is influenced by light so that, at night when it is dark, the motivation for sleep is stronger. That’s why there are people who can’t sleep with the lights on!

Achieving continuous sleep for some becomes a struggle. This is the reason for sleep aids. As we age, we experience many things that disturb our sleep. This makes it really hard for us to continue with an uninterrupted night of sleep. This also leads to a less active person the next day! We all need to have an undisturbed and sound sleep in order to have the energy to stay active and alert throughout the day. Still, achieving continuous sleep is sometimes very hard if not impossible.

Sleep aids are often used because, as we get older, we experience many things that disturb our sleep. Insufficient sleep makes it difficult for one to exercise and this can reduce the benefit of hormones that are released during sleep. There are approximately 100,000 sleep-related vehicle crashes each year and these result in the loss of nearly 1,500 lives. It’s true! These are all cause by the serious consequences of sleep deprivation. If a person is having trouble sleeping, a sleep aid may actually save their life the next day.

It’s very important to get acquainted with some natural sleep aid tips in order to avoid the problems that can come from sleep deprivation. These sleep aids can help to remedy the many difficulties in sleeping for individuals of different age brackets. Even as a baby, one can already experience difficulty in having a good night sleep. Babies usually have a disorganized pattern of sleep and this can make Mommy really tired herself! Still, at an early age, you can still start correcting that possible sleep disorder in the future. There are many natural sleep aids that can do this.

Of course, you wouldn’t want your child growing up with an abnormal sleep pattern. It’s best, as early as the second month, to help your baby get a good night sleep and to become more regular each night. Let them sleep on a firm mattress and put them to bed when they are drowsy. Babies prefer being rocked or fed to sleep. You can try using these aids for your kids so that they start out sleeping the right way. A good head start on their sleep might turn out to be a big help in the future.

Because a large number of people, especially those who are active, start having difficulties in sleeping, it is really very important to set up good habits. If you are experiencing certain difficulties in sleeping, such as nightmares or tossing and turning, you may benefit from a sleep aid. Having difficulty in falling asleep, remaining asleep, or early morning awakenings and develop into bigger problems. Seek out some sleep aids or try seeing a doctor and ask for some advice. If it is not treated early, it might lead to sleep apnea or another serious condition. Staying away from bad habits that lead to certain difficulties in sleeping is not really that tough after all. The benefits are far more rewarding!

Hi,

I’m Max Woody, a 42 year old business owner that for several years experienced insomnia, until just recently finding an all natural product that put an end to sleepless nights.

Falling asleep seemed pretty easy most of the time, staying asleep continued to be the problem. I would wake up early in the morning, sometimes at 2 or 3 am and could not fall back to sleep.

This made my entire day miserable. I spent most of the day feeling exhausted, with bags under my eyes from lack of sleep. This made it hard to function and even harder to operate my business.

I tried several things over the years to cure the problem, including prescription medications like Lunesta and Ambien, to name a few. It turns out these medications produced even worse side effects than the problem itself.

After researching the prescription medications, I became very concerned with the list of possible side effects and even worse, the risks of these effects with long term use.

One day, while at an Urgent Care Center for a severe cold, I noticed a very interesting article in a medical journal. This article featured an all natural product that contained a long list of health benefits, including the cure of sleep problems.

The article really caught my attention, because in several studies, the product also produced excellent results like curing aches and pains in the body, such as arthritis, severe headaches and even helping with high blood pressure and diabetes.

The name of this product is called “Frequensea”. It’s all natural and contains over 200 different nutrients, including antioxidants, amino acids, omega oils and many more. It also contains an amazing product called “Phytoplankton”.

Over the years, several studies were conducted on Phytoplankton and the health benefits of taking this ingredient. Nasa even conducted studies and were amazed at the positive results.

Doctors across the country were so impressed with Frequensea they gave positive comments on the health benefits of this product.

Jerry Tennant, MD, head of the Tennant Institute of Integrative Medicine in Dallas states, “Marine Phytoplankton is one of the most rare ingredients on the planet because it contains, in a concentrated form, almost everything you need for life or the rebuilding of a healthy life.”

I’m truly amazed at the product and will continue to use it everyday. It not only changed my sleeping habits, but also provides me with more energy throughout the day. I feel much better now, compared to just a few months ago.

Many family members and friends I’ve recommended Frequensea to also experienced similar results. My wife no longer suffers from bad migraine headaches or the aches she once felt almost everyday.

It’s a truly amazing product and well worth the experience of trying just one bottle. It comes in an easy to swallow liquid form. The price is very affordable and cost less than most other nutritional products sold through stores.

To get complete details on how to order and watch a video that explains how Frequensea is produced and a long list of health benefits, please visit the website attached to this article.

Max Woody once suffered from insomnia for several years, until recently taking advantage of a product that put an end to sleepless nights. He now recommends this product to family and friends with similar sleep problems and even other more serious health issues.
Finally, I’d like to thank you for reading this article and i hope it was helpful information.

Three of the most commonly used natural sleep aids include kava, melatonin and valerian. These are herbal products that help the body naturally wind down in order to prepare for a full night’s rest. The majority of these items can be purchased over the counter and typically do not need a doctor’s prescription. However, it is best to consult with your doctor before buying any natural sleeping aids. He/she will help diagnose your particular sleep disorder (or if your case is serious enough to warrant the use of natural sleep aids), which can help you figure out which type of natural sleep aid will work best for your needs.

Kava is an herb that serves to naturally combat feelings of anxiety. Having anxiety is a common symptom related to insomnia, which many people suffer from. In natural sleep aids, kava is available for use as a liquid extract, tablet, capsule or beverage. When consumed, kava works as a sedative, which helps insomniacs fall asleep and stay asleep. However, it is important to note that this natural sleep aid should not be used long term since it can cause severe liver damage.

Other natural sleep aids include melatonin, which is actually a naturally recurring hormone in the human body. This hormone works to regulate a person’s sleep cycle and wake cycle. This makes it an obvious choice for use as natural sleep aids. Melatonin comes in capsule or tablet form and is supposed to be taken 30 minutes before going to bed.

Valerian is another herbal product in the natural sleep aids category. This herb can be found in tablet, capsule, tea or liquid extract form and typically takes between 2-3 weeks to take full effect. Valerian should be taken one hour before going to bed.

i am fighting an addiction to opiates and i am having trouble sleeping, what sort of sleep aids could i use?

i have always had trouble sleeping but it is even worse now that i am trying to get clean. the lack of sleep is making it very hard for me to stay clean and it is very frustrating!! i know doctors dont like to give people like me sleep aids but i fear if i dont get something to help me i am going to falter. if anyone knows of a non-habit forming sleep aid i would love to know about it. nothing seems to work!

Answer
This is a question I have answered many times in my practice as an addiction counselor, but the sad part is, the best method varies with each individual.
First, I want to tell you that seeking help through ANY source is a positive step, and I commend you for trying to cope with these stressors that you have identified as relapse triggers.
Here’s how I break it down:
1. Understand that your brain chemistry is changing, trying to return to normal. Abstinence from ALL mood altering chemicals, including caffeine and nicotine, will speed that process. (Sorry, benadryl is a mood altering chemical.)
2. Be patient with your body and brain. You’ve put them through hell. They WILL recover, but in their own time.
3. Exercise is good, in moderation. Google Search “John Ratey, M.D.” He recently published a book called “Spark” that has an excellent chapter on addiction. Follow his advice to wear out your body and have it ready for sleep when time comes.
4. Melatonin has worked well for some of my clients, but remember, everyone’s results will vary, and it usually takes at least two weeks of taking the supplement daily before it begins to take effect.
5. If you have access to health care, ask your doctor about Trazodone. I’ve seen recovering alcoholics use it as a sleep aid before, but I AM NOT A DOCTOR. Again, ask your physician. Trazodone is available by prescription only.
6. Meditation can, if practiced consistently, reduce anxiety, increase focus, and make sleeping easier. I have seen the Zen tradition known as Vipassina change lives, including my own.
The last and, in my opinion best advice I can give, is to find a 12-Step group. Narcotics Anonymous has web sites for most major metropolitan areas, and their sites all have lists of meetings.
I hope this helps.
